Enryaku-ji is the headquarters for the Tendai sect of Buddhism. Tendai started off with a young Buddhist monk who had been studying in China, and finally found the Answer. He built himself a hut on the mountain and founded the sect. By time the sect grew, and became very influential in Japanese politics. In 1571 the warlord Nobunaga Oda decided that enough was enough and destroyed the whole place. Oda was murdered a little later, and those who came after him permitted the monks to rebuild. This is one of the many buildings. The temple buildings up here are not equally well-painted as down in Kyoto. |
