Shortly after Panthéon, I walked past another church and I went in. Not because I had read about it in the guide book, but only because I walked by. And in difference from Notre Dame and Saint-Suplice, Saint-Étienne-du-Mont is a church that deserves more that the standard walk up to the altar and back. Light and spacious, and this elegant balustrade with the stairs on the side and the crucifix on top serves to give the church a special character. More precisely, this is a rood screen, and long ago they were commonplace in French churches, but today, this is the only church in Paris to still have it. Here you can find more information about Saint-Étienne-du-Mont and rood screens. |
